Poliomyelitis
Polio is caused by a virus that attacks the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord although not all infections result in severe injuries and paralysis.
The first recognized epidemic was in Vermont where 132 cases, involving 18 deaths were recorded.The first detailed case of polio was in recorded by Sir Walter Scott, who was infected in 1773. His doctor listed the epidemic as a teething fever, but his own record of what had happened to him confirmed that it was polio. He was left with a permanently week leg.
Polio symptoms are general discomfort or uneasiness, headache, red throat, slight fever, sore throat, and vomiting which is not fun. Signs and tests that your care provider may find: are abnormal reflexes, back stiffness, difficulty lifting the head or legs when lying on the back, stiff neck, trouble bending the neck, cultures of throat washing, stools or spinal fluid, spinal tap and examination of the spinal fluid, test for levels of antibodies to the polio virus.
